Frequently asked questions
For how long is a Baume & Mercier watch guaranteed?

Please consult our Guarantees section.

Why does a watch need regular servicing?

A watch mechanism works non-stop, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
Therefore, the movement components as well as the lubricating oil are subject to age and wear.

Furthermore, the different gaskets (case back, crystal, crown…) may deteriorate and not ensure the air/water-resistance of the watch anymore.
A watch should be serviced regularly to ensure optimal working efficiency and to preserve its precision and air/water-resistance.

• “Battery replacement service” is necessary every 2 to 6 years (depending on the model)

• “Maintenance service” should be carried out every 3 to 4 years

• A complete overhaul “Complete service” should be carried out every 5 years

Where can I have my watch inspected or repaired?

We invite you to visit an authorized retailer or contact the authorized After-Sales Service center of your choice. Please do not forget to bring your guarantee card, if your timepiece is still covered by the guarantee.

How long does it take to receive an estimate?

Before supplying an estimate, each watch received undergoes a complete diagnosis to check functional as well as aesthetic aspects.

This diagnosis enables us to determine the type of service to perform and the spare parts needing to be replaced, bearing in mind the client's initial request.

An estimate must be addressed to the client within 1 week if the watch is repaired locally and within 3 to 4 weeks if it is repaired in Switzerland.

Why can it take anywhere from 3 weeks to more than 3 months to service my watch?

In principle, spare parts for Baume & Mercier watches manufactured within the last 20 years are available and our repair lead time is determined by the type of service carried out: Battery service, Maintenance service (3 weeks) or Complete service (4 weeks).
Spare parts are not always available for watches manufactured more than 20 years ago.

Consequently, they must be ordered from Switzerland, which often means a longer time to wait. Sometimes, specific components (dial, case, bracelet) are out of stock and need to be re-manufactured, which can mean an additional delay.

Finally, certain watches have to be returned to Baume & Mercier, Switzerland for repair and in this case an additional 4 to 8 weeks is required.

Is a repair carried out in an authorized After-Sales Service Center as good as a repair carried out in a regional Richemont platform or by watchmakers at Baume & Mercier Switzerland?

Yes, all the watchmakers in our authorized Baume & Mercier retailers and After-Sales Service Centers have undergone specific training and use Baume & Mercier original spare parts and the same equipment as in our Baume & Mercier After-Sales Service Center in Switzerland.

What are your recommendations and instructions concerning the maintenance of my watch?

You may learn more about taking care of your Baume & Mercier watch by consulting the section "Tips for Care and Maintenance".

For how long will the battery in my quartz watch last? And when should I change the battery in my quartz watch?

The life of a battery can vary between 2 to 6 years, depending on the model. Most of our quartz watches featuring a centre-seconds hand are equipped with an end-of-life (EOL) battery-warning indicator.
The centre seconds hand jumps every four seconds to indicate that the battery is running low approximately two weeks before battery replacement is necessary.

We would like to draw your attention to
the fact that only an authorized Baume & Mercier retailer or After-Sales Service Center is entitled to carry out battery replacements in order to ensure that the battery and other tests meet the quality standards set by Baume & Mercier.

The International and Limited Baume & Mercier Guarantee may apply only if these conditions are met.

Why is my mechanical watch less precise than a quartz watch?

The difference in precision comes from the fact that the two movements are different:

• Quartz watches are extremely accurate thanks to their high vibration frequency (32 kHz). The precision variance is approximately 1-2 minutes (fast or slow) per year.

• In comparison, a mechanical movement (with either manual or automatic winding) contains a balance-spring, the frequency of which may vary between 2.5 and 4 Hz, which can lead to a precision variance of approximately 1-2 minutes per week. The precision of an automatic winding movement can also be influenced by how the watch is worn.

It is wound by the regular movements of your wrist; hence the watch strap should not be too loose to avoid any loss of autonomy as you move. Its working may also be influenced by environmental factors (temperature, pressure, humidity, magnetic fields).

Is my watch water-resistant? And how can I make sure my watch stays water-resistant?

For more than 15 years, all Baume & Mercier watches are water-resistant to a depth of at least 30 metres.

The water-resistance of a watch protects the movement from dust, moisture and from any deterioration when fully immersed in water. The gaskets keep the watch water-resistant.
However, as they are constantly exposed to several forms of outside aggressions (cosmetics, perspiration and temperature changes), the water-resistance of a watch may decrease over time.

Therefore, we advise you to have the water-resistance of your watch checked every 12 months. If your water-resistant watch shows condensation under the glass crystal, we recommend that you take it immediately to an authorized retailer or an authorized After-Sales Service Center.
The appearance of condensation may signify that there has been an infiltration of water.

For how long is a leather strap supposed to last?

We endeavour to produce straps of the highest quality; however the lifespan of a leather strap depends on the condition and frequency of use.

Therefore, ageing will be accelerated by different forms of external aggressions (acidity of the skin, perspiration, temperature changes, intense exposure to sunlight, creams/cosmetics, etc.) and by extreme situations of use (sports, immersion in water).
This is why we recommend, for aesthetic as well as functional reasons (no risk of the strap breaking), to change your leather strap annually if it is necessary. However, if you take good care of your strap, it may well last longer.

For how long is a rubber strap supposed to last?

We endeavour to produce straps of the highest quality; however the lifespan of a rubber strap depends on the condition and frequency of use.

Ageing will be influenced by different forms of external aggressions: for instance, intense exposure to sunlight or prolonged rubbing against a piece of clothing may cause discolouring (especially on white straps) and lead to premature deterioration of the strap. However, if you take good care of your strap, it may well last for a few years.

What is a magnetic field and how should I avoid one?

Our environment is increasingly subject to disturbances due to magnetic sources.

These disturbances can have an effect on the working of your watch whether mechanical or quartz. A quartz watch can be affected when it enters a strong magnetic field, however it works normally again when no longer in it.

This disturbance therefore lasts as long as your watch is at the heart of the magnetic field. A mechanical watch is also sensitive to strong magnetic fields.
The resulting disturbance could, in some cases, magnetize steel parts in the movement and more particularly the mainspring.
Some parts are likely to adhere to one another and the watch could advance or slow down considerably or stop.
In this case an authorized After-Sales Service Center must undertake a de-magnetization intervention.

Does the steel case or bracelet of my watch contain nickel?

The stainless steel that we use in our products contains nickel, but all our nickel-containing metals comply with the European norm EN 1811, which defines the nickel release limit [salted-out Ni <0.5mg /cm2 /week].
It is important to know that sensitivity to nickel does not depend on the metal's nickel content itself, but on two factors:

• the extent to which nickel released by corrosion is in contact with the skin;

• the degree of personal allergy. Please bear in mind that people who are already sensitive to nickel can present reactions to a lower rate than the norm.

Do the diamonds set on Baume & Mercier watches have a certificate of origin?

Our diamond-set watches are accompanied by a Baume & Mercier certificate of authenticity, indicating the quality of the diamonds as well as the caratage.

Moreover, Baume & Mercier purchases its diamonds according to the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme and the associated World Diamond Council System of Warranties which were set up to put an end to the trade of “conflict/blood diamonds” and keep them out of the supply chain. Baume & Mercier purchases uniquely from diamond suppliers who respect these systems and a guarantee is required on all invoices for diamonds made out to Baume & Mercier.

As required, all Baume & Mercier invoices include the following warranty statement: The following statement of warranty applies to products containing one or more diamonds:

“The diamonds [in the products] herein invoiced have been purchased from legitimate sources not involved in funding conflict and in compliance with United Nations Resolutions.
The seller hereby guarantees that these diamonds are conflict free, based on personal knowledge and/or written guarantees provided by the supplier of these diamonds."
